Microbiology Conference
Background
An emerging infectious disease (EID) is an infectious disease whose incidence has increased in the past 20 years, and could increase in the near future. Emerging infections account for at least 12% of all human pathogens. EIDs are caused by newly identified species or strains (e.g., SARS, AIDS) that may have evolved from a known infection (e.g., influenza), or spread to a new population, or to an area undergoing ecologic transformation. They could also be re-emerging infections, such as drug resistant tuberculosis. Of growing concern are adverse synergistic interactions between emerging diseases and other infectious and non-infectious conditions leading to the development of novel syndemics.
We pay close attention to possible differences between the major pathogen groups—bacteria& viruses. We also examine in detail the relationship between host range and pathogen emergence or re-emergence, considering both the type and diversity of nonhuman hosts. We catalogue the kinds of proximate factors that have been linked with pathogen emergence and re-emergence. We focus mainly on pathogen diversity (as numbers of species) and the effects of disease that they impose, noting that many diseases can be caused by more than one species of pathogen. However, we comment on the transmissibility of pathogens once they have been introduced into the human population because transmissibility is an important determinant of the potential public health problem. We will also discuss the current system used for developing, testing and regulating vaccines, as well as mutual protection as the key for disease prevention. This seminar is organized as a platform whereby clinicians, microbiologists, virologists, veterinary officers and public health experts could share their knowledge and experience in this field. Discussion in this platform may spark ideas that may be used in the future for better patient care & management.
Objective:
-
To provide a platform for health professionals to discuss and understand the challengesand repercussions related to a massive flooding catastrophe.
-
To provide updates on the emerging and re-emerging viral threats to the nation
